Caps Off To: Seventh Generation’s Latest Eco-Friendly Packaging Initiative

If you’re into house cleaning and laundry stuff, you would’ve probably heard about Seventh Generation, a US company that sells plant-based cleaning and personal care products.
The company is one of the 2,600 certified B Corporations across 150 industries, in 60 countries.
It’s mission: to manufacture and package products in an environmental friendly way, using environmental friendly raw materials.
The company’s product line strongly aligns with its mission statement and even the packaging it uses is mostly made of recyclable plastic.
And there has been a new addition to its already strong eco-friendly product and packaging lineup, as the company has recently started using PCR caps for dish soap packaging.
“We’re happy to report that with this latest initiative, about 85% of Seventh Generation packaging components are PCR-manufactured,” said Joey Bergstein, CEO at the Seventh Generation.
PCR or post-consumer recycled polypropylene is the recycled form of virgin plastic. Its use has been increasing across different industries as it helps reduce plastic waste and carbon footprint. However, so far, it has mainly been used in the design of packaging containers. Seventh Generation, as such, has provided a new packaging direction for businesses wherecaps and closures can also be included in the design of an environmental-friendly packaging.
The company’s source of plastic for the design of PCR caps?
Discarded and recycled plastic hangers!
The company and its packaging partners maintain a supplier agreement in place which helps them to resource recycled plastic hangers in the volume they need.
Of course, the implementation of the solution was not easy, as the company had to overcome many different design challenges, in particular, user-friendliness, functionality, custom color integration and impact resistance.
It’s a story of innovation that deserves massive appreciation and serves as an example for others in the detergent and house cleaning industry to follow.
