Controlling the Packaging Beast: 3 Tips to Manage the Packaging Development Process

Manufacturing top-quality products is never the end of the race. As a manufacturer, there are plenty of aspects you need to work on. These are the product’s promotion, placement, and advertising—and above all, it’s packaging!

The packaging is a time-intensive, elaborate process and has too many stakeholders involved. You’ll only be the best product on the table if you work closely with all these stakeholders.
Here are a few tips to help you through:

Coordinate the suppliers

Designing the packaging, getting the designs custom-printed, and getting the final print in place—these are all tricky chores. They take up too much effort, time, and energy. If you’re juggling with all these tasks at once, major miscommunication could happen.
To avoid this, make sure you have looped in the suppliers well ahead of the time. Conduct in-depth meetings with the team to discuss the design specifications, label application, and handling. Make sure you’ve conveyed all your preferences and have well-defined requirements. Since vials and jars are manufactured in bulk, it would not be feasible to make any alterations in the order later on.

Work closely with the distributors

Wholesalers always sell packaging jars and vials in huge order quantity. This means that there are too many pieces to move on. The larger the order quantity, the more is your distributor expected to charge you. You need to consider the upfront cash requirements before it’s too late. Most distributors might even not agree to sell your products in the market if the minimum order quantity (MOQ) doesn’t meet their threshold. If the order quantity is too low, the per-unit selling cost would be higher for the distributor and they might reject the order completely.
Make sure you’ve spoken to your distributors about the order quantity and the rates well in advance to avoid them canceling on you at the eleventh hour.

Protect your container

Make sure you’re getting a container manufactured that is truly yours. This means coming up with your unique design that none of your competitors have ever opted for. A custom-designed container not only grabs the buyer’s attention but also makes the product stand out. You can enhance the consumer’s ease of use by adding an airless pump instead of a normal cap.
Forget about the design. You can even speak to the packaging company and see how you can play around with the decorations. You could get your logo engrained with decal application and hot stamping. Other ways to add a personalized touch to bottle decorations are full-body embossments, frosting, spray coating, and acid etching. If you truly want your product to be the highlight of the superstore aisle, you’ll have to be equally involved in the designing process. Just make sure you’ve communicated it to the packaging company and have a patent to protect the container designer.
