Automotive Sustainability Under Scrutiny: A Question Mark on Packaging

In the past few years, we have seen the automotive industry quickly expand and adapt to the latest technologies because of increase in competition. As more people around the globe turn toward sustainability and eco-friendliness, the automotive industry is in a dire need to prepare and embrace this change too.
Automotive industry has been considered responsible for the enormous landfills of discarded tires, and excessive consumption of fossil fuel. Recently, however, experts are talking about the role of packaging in automotive sustainability. Packaging is one of the most important yet overlooked elements that run through the distribution and supply chain of automotive industry.
Many manufacturers are now considering shifting to reusable packaging as it lasts longer while also ensuring maximum protection of all automotive parts. The manufacturers are in a dire need of a sustainable solution to cut down their costs; however, adopting sustainable practices is more complex than it may seem.

The “Take, Make, Dispose” Philosophy

The automotive industry currently operates on the traditional manufacturing approach of take, make, and dispose. Manufacturing units take materials that are required to produce the finished goods. After the raw materials are fully utilized and no longer useable, they are disposed off through landfills, burning, or other methods. According to a research article, automotive industry only recycles 14 percent of the wasted plastic, whereas 40 percent of it ends up in landfills. This disposed plastic is predicted to take almost a thousand years to fully degrade.

Industry’s Goals on the Matter

The automotive industry is currently responsible for producing an enormous amount of plastic waste. However, a large number of manufacturers are now promoting the use of plastics that are biodegradable and many are ambitious toward utilizing only recycled plastics for their manufacturing needs in the coming years.

Packaging Limitations

Companies that plan on recycling used plastic often find it challenging to collect it all. Many manufacturers may even take a step back from the idea after analyzing the operational costs associated with plastic collection—let alone recycling. Those who’ve announced their intention to adopt use sustainable plastics in the future are going to be faced by many obstacles—but as we believe, nothing great comes easy!
