The global smart packaging market is expected to value at $26.7bn by 2024. Smart packaging links the digital world with the physical world—it forms a bridge between consumers, retailers, manufacturers and social media channels; it has made packaging more personal, individual and communicative.

Intelligent Packaging:

Packaging experts refer to intelligent packaging as a way to monitor the condition of the packaged products and provide information on its quality during storage and transportation.
Intelligent packaging systems include hardware components like time-temperature indicators (TTI), radio frequency identification (RFID) system, freshness/ripening indicators or gas detectors.
Smart packaging relays information to consumers, helping them better understand the product and interact with it safely. However, in spite of the promises that the technology offers, there are several challenges that lie in the way of it being broadly adopted.

Additional costs

Smart packaging solutions are expensive compared to conventional packaging solutions such as pallets, corrugated boxes and stretch wrap. A reason for this extra cost is the lack of mass manufacturing of these packing solutions.

Requires new manufacturing techniques

Before brands can apply smart packaging, manufacturers need to develop indicators and sensors that are compatible with their current packaging standards.
Researchers have realized that printing methods are a great approach for fabricating smart packaging owing to their ability of directly depositing electronics—like batteries, sensors, displays and RFID tags—on flexible substrates in a cost-effective manner.
