Does Cannabis Go Bad Over Time?

Theoretically, cannabis doesn’t go bad in the sense that it has adverse effects on the user. However, old weed stash and medical marijuana that has been with you for a long time (read: a year) do alter in color, shape, and potency.
Let’s take an in-depth look into marijuana and find out whether cannabis can go bad over time.

Cannabis Doesn't Have a “Sell-By” Date

As long as your marijuana stash hasn’t developed mold and bacteria, it’s okay to use weed that’s a few months old.
However, old marijuana tends to change its chemical compounds with concentrated exposure to different elements like oxygen, heat, and light.
As the marijuana bud is made of a structure of cannabinoids, THC, CBD, and CBN are the most common type of chemical that’s useful in inducing the infamous “high.”
THC begins as a non-psychoactive compound called THCA. It’s only after it goes through a rigorous process of decarboxylation does the cannabinoid changes to THC and further into CBN and CBD.
Each chemical compound reacts differently and produces different results. The older marijuana gets, the more chances of its higher concentration and altered effects on the mind and body.

How to Check If Your Stash Has Expired

If you’re unsure about the freshness and potency of your marijuana stash, here are a few indicators to help you double-check.
Look: Pay close attention to the color and structure of the marijuana flower and buds. Check for mold and mildew growth with white and black spots on the green leaves and flowers.

Smell: Marijuana is an aromatic plant and has a subtle yet distinct herby smell. If your stash is old and dried-out, it’ll smell funky and stale.
Touch: If your stash easily crumbles into a fine powder, it’s likely that it’s gone bad and will not have the same effect as a fresh, sticky, and springy marijuana bud.

Approach Old Marijuana with Caution

If you’re willing to smoke old marijuana, you’ll either not experience the exuberant feeling of ‘getting high’ or you’ll face a different experience altogether.
Old marijuana will either go bad or lack potency or it’ll just help relax your muscles and put you to sleep without giving you the expected high.
Dried marijuana is incredibly harsh to smoke and isn’t a comfortable or pleasant experience for the user.
