The Latest Medical Marijuana Packaging Regulations and Their Implications

Just a couple of days back, the United States government introduced new regulations related to medical marijuana packaging. Industry experts agree that these regulations will have major implications on how medical marijuana is packaged in the future.
So without further ado, let’s take a look at what these new regulations are and how they will affect the packaging industry:

The New Regulations

The new regulations place a lot of emphasis on child resistant packaging. Companies have been given a deadline until January 2020 to make necessary changes to their packaging.
Once the time is up, companies will have to make sure that they follow the new rules. Even individual doses need to be child resistant.
As far as single-serving or inhalation products are concerned, manufacturers need to make sure that they are appropriately labeled.
On the other hand, oral and edible products need to be child resistant throughout the product life.

How People Have Reacted To the Regulations

Manufacturers and distributors in the industry have mixed feelings about the new regulations. Many of them have stated that child resistant packaging can be expensive especially with smaller orders.
Some customers find the new packaging difficult to use and this has affected product sales. They argue that in case of certain products, it’s not easy to develop creative packaging which is easy to use as well.

In some states like Colorado, companies have dropped products from their portfolio simply because they are no longer feasible for them to produce.
When it comes to marijuana, retailers agree that it’s important that they practice caution before placing orders. Furthermore, experts also feel that it’s best that they don’t retain excess packaging inventory.

Laws Regarding White Labeling

The new regulations have basically abolished white labeling since all partners involved with brand owners in manufacturing, supplying and distributing need valid licenses.
The authorities were aware that in the past, brand owners worked with unlicensed cultivators. However, with the introduction of the new regulations, that would no longer be possible.
There have been rumors that soon the authorities will introduce new licenses for marketing and branding however, only time will tell if any of these rumors are true.
