Fluorination: Why It’s Important In Packaging

The process of manufacturing chemicals is never easy. You need to be extremely careful while handling them. Furthermore, storing them in itself can be a major problem.
Strong chemicals can permeate the container and cause irreversible damage to the product. So how should you deal with issues like these?
Fluorination might be the answer.

Fluorination

Fluorination refers to the process in which the internal as well as the external parts of the container are treated with Fluorine. Manufacturers will tell you that a major problem with bottles is that they often sink or collapse during the manufacturing process.

This problem is referred to as paneling and it usually occurs because of changes in the air pressure within the container. However, fluorination helps prevent this from happening. The gas minimizes the distortion of the container.
It does so by creating a barrier, which prevents the container’s shape and size from changing. Manufacturers have the choice of doing fluorination either before or after the manufacturing process.

The Process

As stated earlier, fluorination is performed in order to enhance the barrier properties of containers. It does so by enhancing the adhesive qualities of the container.
Basically, the container is placed in a steel bin and subsequently exposed to fluorine. The exposure to gas results in formation of carbon fluorine bonding, both outside and inside the container.
The bonding seals the pores in the container walls and prevents chemicals from entering it.
The process is divided into nine levels. In the later stages, the process revolves around removing aggressive contaminants from the product. This also provides enhanced protection to the container.
The level of fluorination depends on multiple factors, which include time, pressure, and temperature.
Fluorination can be used for manufacturing for different kinds of products, which include HDPE, LDPE, and PP. It is used on all kinds of products that are susceptible to paneling. Some examples of these products include solvents, automotive products and paint thinners.
Therefore, if you want your products to last for a long time, this is the process that you need to go for. Not only does it ensure longevity, it also makes sure that there is no loss of content or flavor and discoloration.
